To clarify, for the record: When Co.Exist obtained sample messages from this project, they were sent by Al Jazeera with personal identifiers and no request that identifiers be hidden/obscured. In addition - as mentioned above - these personal identifiers appeared on the internet first, on Al Jazeera's map, before this article even went online.
Co.Exist & Fast Company made the decision to obscure these names, post-publication, after a request was received via email from an Al Jazeera employee. Due to the nature of this story and the fact that AJ themselves censored identities post-publication, we agreed with Al Jazeera's request.
However, I want to emphasize that any names in this article were first published online elsewhere and that Co.Exist was supplied with personal identifiers by Al Jazeera themselves - who did not strip them from messages or request that we do so.
